THE CALL OF LT. GENERAL THEOPHILUS Y. DANJUMA (RTD) FOR SELF-DEFENCE BY THE CIVIL POPULACE IN NIGERIA by SHABA Mafu

A recent statement credited to the former Chief of Army Staff of the Nigeria Army, Lt. General Theophilus Danjuma has been raising dust both in the political and in the military circles. While the opposition camp in the political arena had applauded the bold statement of the former Army General, there is great discountenance to the statement in the military circles. In politics, the opposition party scouts for every cheap opportunity to win political points and may always be too explosive and not actually objective in their analyses of issues or at their best, blows issues out of proportion due to over-emphasis; all in an attempt to sway people’s allegiance and support from the ruling party. All the same, the opposition would always have points to make, primarily (in sane climes) to put the ruling party on their toes. If wisdom and objectivity is allowed to play in the camp of the ruling party, it then means that the roles of the opposition parties are very sacrosanct in the successful governance of any democratic nation. But because Nigeria politics have their eyes on their napes, they most times reason against conventions and the reality on ground. This is the irony in Nigerian politics.
The former Army General, Danjuma called for self-defence of civilians at the maiden Convocation ceremony of the Taraba State University recently, saying that the Nigeria Armed Forces was not ready to defend them. He also accused the Army of not being neutral, and that they collude with the bandits to kill our people…to kill Nigerians. Taraba State is one of the States in Nigeria that has satisfactorily taken the dose of the reckless killings of the emboldened Fulani herdsmen.  This accusatory call ought to be investigated by the federal government, and appropriate steps taken, especially as it has indicted the Nigerian Army of taking covert support to these demons of death. A statement credited to a person of General Danjuma must not be taken lightly. The Army also knows this. But in the character of Nigerian system and structure, the Army has quickly come up to defend itself against the statement. One understands the psychological pains and pressure inflicted on the Army by General Danjuma’s statement, at the same, one must appreciate and celebrate the Nigerian Armed Forces for the various feats they have accomplished in the defence of this great country at various fronts, and especially as they are seen to be overwhelmed by the security challenges in the country from the past administrations. It is not also wrong to point out where they need to carefully examine where there is possible betrayal from the bad eggs among them, and not bursting into an emotional defence to what is very obvious. I am completely in support of General Danjuma’s statement because the civil populace should complement the Army in the security of the defenceless citizens f this country. The Army can’t be everywhere at the same time. What is the difference between what Danjuma has said and the establishment of the government-backed Ciivilian Joint Task Force in the North-Eastern Nigeria supporting the army in the efforts to crush the boko haram vampires? If anything at all, the Elder statesman, Danjuma must have made that statement in utter frustration, ‘desperation’ and disappointment. As a former General, his statement must have been to prop the Army to objective discharge of the national duties, and not to denigrate them, being his former constituency.
Sadly as well, the Army who quickly jumped up for self-defence should look critically at the excercise Ayem Akpatuma earlier launched in Benue and Taraba States to curtail the mindless killings of the innocent lives in the mentioned states. In the midst of akpatumising the areas, there are still ceaseless killing going on there as reports have it. Why is the exercise a failure compared to when Pythons went to dance in the South-East, and the Crocodiles smiled in the South-south, the records were evident and telling. The effects were undeniably substantial. Are we saying that the Fulani marauders are simply invincible or does the Army actually sympathize with their cause? Marry the statement of General Danjuma with the flagrant insubordination leveled against the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris by the people of Benue State when President Muhammadu Buhari went to pay a condolence visit to that state after the brutal massacre that left 73 people dead on the new year day of 2018 in that State.. Against the express directive of the President for the IG to relocate to Benue to closely monitor and effect peace in the troubled State, the ‘smart’ man was alleged to have passed only a night there and relocated to safe havens on personal discretion and directive. Is this not weighty enough to substantiate the call for self-defence by the local populace? This is not a call to anarchy as the Nigerian Army wants Nigerians to believe.
Just of recent, the governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello made a similar call for people to defend themselves. He was accused by the Nigerian Senate through his political ‘arch-enemy’, Senator Dino Melaye of recruiting and arming State Armed Forces and political thugs for the 2019 general elections, and that this action by Governor was a fragrant violation of the Nigerian constitution. But few days after this parochial statement by the enemies of Kogi State and Nigeria, the so-called Fulani Herdsmen, who are actually terrorists disguising in that name, attacked and killed about thirty-two innocent people from the state. Similarly, these marauders came to Northern part of Edo State to launch their havoc. It took the coordinated efforts of the local Vigilante groups to ward off the attacks. Consequently, ten of these physical demons were arrested and handed over to the Army who took them to Governor Obaseki in Benin-City. Though that was the last I heard about the arrested herdsmen, but their attacks were forestalled by that collaborative effort and lives were consequently saved. They only succeeded in chopping off the wrist of a farmer in that attack.
Nigerian Army should not take General Danjuma’s statement personal. Let the Buhari-led administration take the opposition’s views objectively not minding the insulting over-emphasis of the weakness of the administration. For any democratic structure to be so-called, the opinion of the opposition should be respected, whether the opposition is in form of a single person, a group, a political party, Civil Society Organizations, etc. After all, no matter our views and takes on issues, one denominator bounds us all together, we are all Nigerians, working for her peace and progress in different dimensions and perspectives!

DISTINGUISHED SENATOR ALI WAKILI IS DEAD.

After all the fortunes he has made for himself, this is how it all came to an end. The only legacy that may speak for him is the numbers of people he was able to touch in one way or the other while he was alive. RIP distinguished Senator!

CONTROVERSY TRAILS GLOBACOM SACK OF 90 STAFF.

Controversy trails Globacom sack of 90 staff
Controversy has continued to trail the mass sack of about 90 people by Telecom firm, Globacom.
Amidst reports last week that the firm laid off 90 of its female staff in various Glo Friendship Centres across the country for being married, an official told PREMIUM TIMES it was a routine exercise that affected all staff irrespective of gender or marital status.
The staff, mostly women, were on March 9 served letters terminating their services for allegedly being married.
Following the report, which went viral online, Nigerians accused the company of discrimination, not only against women, but also against their marital status.
But, an official of the company, who requested that her name not be disclosed for fear of victimisation as she was not authorised to speak on the matter, said reports about only female staff members being sacked because of their marital status was not correct.
“The truth is that people were sacked. Men, women, married and unmarried were sacked,” she said. “There are many reasons for all those things. But, when people say only unmarried women were affected, I don’t understand where that is coming from.
“As I speak, there are so many married women in the company. There were cases where men were removed and replaced with women in some sensitive positions,” she said.
The official, who described the sack as a normal annual evaluation and rationalisation exercise, said a lot of people who met the minimum performance criteria set by the company, were promoted, including married women.
The official said the real reason the affected staff were asked to go was their failure to successfully scale through an annual performance appraisal exercise.
“People who claimed they were removed because they were married did not say what they did to deserve that.
“At the end of every year, every normal organization conducts an annual performance evaluation of staff. If the cut-off point is say 80 per cent, and one fails to meet it, one would know what would happen.
“In fact, even if one scores 100 per cent, one would still be at the discretion of the company if you have one or two issues pending against them in the past.”
In a service industry as telecoms, she said, it was possible some of them were rude to customers and the report got to management.
“No decent company comes out to talk about what they do about their staff appraisal. But, the issue is that Nigerians know how to appeal to emotions. So, even if they did something wrong, to attract sympathy, they would choose one thing that appeals to sentiments to blame their sack on.”
She said the management of the company had fulfilled all its obligations to the affected workers, particularly the payment of all their benefits and entitlements.
“All the affected workers were paid their emolument as they were going. The truth is that it might be a painful decision. But, if an organisation does an appraisal of its staff and found some to be wanting in their productivity, no one would want to keep them. Anyone who keeps non-performing staff would be jeopardising their bottom line at the end of the year,” the official said.
Efforts to get an official reaction from the firm were unsuccessful as its spokesperson declined comment.
It is not clear why the firm, owned by billionaire Mike Adenuga, does not want to publicly clarify its actions.

CHINA PARLIAMENT REMOVES PRESIDENTIAL TERM LIMIT

Culled from frank ofili's tag on facebook:

Of course China was never going to abandon dictatorship. Politically communist; economically capitalist - a contradiction of sorts - Chinese people, like Russia, are more in bed with dictatorship than with democracy. Who will forget the bestiality with which the Tianamen Square protest was dealt with.
Now that presidential term limit has been removed, the president can effectively rule for life with uncontrolled powers.
More human rights abuses in the horizon. More headache for the western world, and more economic exploitation of Africa.

DEATH BY HANGING FOR MAKERS OF HATE SPEECHES: A HYPOCRITICAL MOVE BY NIGERIA’S NATIONAL ASSEMBLY by SHABA Mafu.

Gallows noose on white Background : Stock Photo

A bill to condemn to death anyone who caused death to someone by making hate speeches is being proposed by Nigeria’s National Assembly. When the bill is successfully passed by the two Houses of Assembly and an assent given to it by the Executive President of the country, it eventually becomes a law. To that extent, the court interprets when a speech becomes a ‘hate’ one. If not properly followed and objectively implemented, any members of the opposition to the ruling party who would criticize the government or condemn any policies of the government might face the hangman’s noose. It might be for political witch-hunt at the end of the day. The bill is been hurriedly discussed without taking into consideration that it will ultimately affect the Northern region of the country mostly where religious violence is more prevalent because of the hate speeches of some of the Islamic clerics and their deadly teachings and instigation against the Christians. Over 98% of hate speech-inspired violence have occurred in the Northern region of Nigeria with the attendant massacre of the residents, particularly from the Southern extraction who are majorly Christians. Will a Northern president muster enough political Will to execute death sentence passed on a religious cleric from Northern extraction for obviously causing the death of the Southern 'unbelievers'? Would sentiments and bias and moral weakness not override what was termed a law?
Sometime last year, the fire-brand Apostle Johnson Suleiman of the Omega Fire Ministries condemned the killings of Christians in Southern Kaduna. He was brutally attacked for making hate speech, when what the cleric said was that Christians should defend themselves when attacked, and that it is foolishness for Christians to poke out their necks to be brutally slaughtered by the senseless marauders who have no single value for life. His counsel was taken to be hate speech, capable of igniting violence and inciting public disturbance and general insecurity. Those who actually made hate-speeches that resulted in the calamitous death of many innocent people were not viciously attacked and condemned by these hypocritical political and religious leaders, as they did to the dynamic Apostle Suleiman merely exercised his fundamental right of freedom of speech.
If we are to talk of sanitizing the society by cheaply and thoughtlessly passing of death bills, have they realized how many lives and generations the looters of Nigeria treasury and economic saboteurs, have wasted and literally killed in Nigeria? Have they forgotten how many Nigerians consciously jumped into the lagoon in Lagos State in 2017 alone, because of poverty, frustration and joblessness occasioned by the high-tech corruption of most politicians in Nigeria? Can we recall how many young men and women have taken poisonous snipers and died because of frustration? What of the young women and men who have taken to prostitution and armed robbery, kidnapping and cultism because of being obviously ‘dead’ while alive? It is not that a society can be completely crime-free even if everyone was gainfully employed; but it is believed that most of these crimes would not have been committed by these young and promising youths if the economy was not perpetually destroyed by the organized, systemic and systematic corruption of some of our political leaders.
If the Nigerian Parliamentarians actually want to sanitize the society by death sentences, they should start by passing a bill that anyone convicted for corruptly enriching himself/herself should unavoidably be escorted to the hangs-man noose. For instance, all the contemporary ‘snakes’ that swallowed N36Million, the owner of the car that hosted the N24Million ‘burnt’ should be hanged, if convicted by the court of law. The ‘monkey’ that also swallowed millions of Naira, all from JAMB office alone, should be marched to gallows. Time will fail me to mention myriad of politicians under the probe of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC); not to mention those pleading for settlement Out of Court, should all visit the hangsman when eventually convicted to death by court of competent jurisdiction. This is the beginning of societal sanitation.

Corruption is worse than hate speeches. If the commonwealth in Nigeria is evenly distributed and these evil and corrupt politicians desist from corruptly enriching themselves, Nigerians would be a better place for everyone to live meaningful and fulfilled lives. The Parliamentarians should stop this hypocrisy and join in the spirit and truth of the fight against corruption being the mantra of the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. Even if the Executives may not have the political wherewithal to execute the fight against corruption as expected by Nigerians, the National Parliament can act an active catalyst to brutally fight against this enduring social malady. They should stop this hypocrisy of proposing death sentence against hate speech makers. That is not what we need for now!
